how true this is! and i’m guilty of it too, hopefully not anymore.

bbc news: manners on the move

[i saw this again today but can't find the credit for the original source! whoever it was, did well]

you’re in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till.

behind the shop assistant at the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have. the shopper in front of you has also seen them and is eyeing them with desire.

both of you have forgotten your purses.

it would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes. the shop assistant remains at the till waiting. your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.

she prepares to throw her purse to you. if she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes! at a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and `whilst it is in flight’ you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes!

but, you must always remember that until the purse has `actually been thrown’, it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other shopper and you would be OFFSIDE!

legend:
shoe shop = football field
getting the shoes = scoring a goal
shop assistant = goal keeper from other team
1st person in queue = defending player from other team
2nd person in queue (you) = attacking player from your team
your friend = (probably) midfield or defensive player from your team
purse = the football

[it is with great irony that this post can have the same title and follow that of yesterday]

as an irishman and one of the founding nations of the `the council of europe’ i am deeply shocked and embarassed by the following:

bbc, cia policy of rendition

my government has sold our nation and its people done the river. unfortunately i do not have the time to rant on the contents of this story, suffice it to say, they are not doing it in my interests as a citizen of ireland.
